CollegeBasketballArchive.com releases thousands of newspaper articles on every NCAA tournament
Find news, rosters, stats and schedules in newspaper articles since the tournament's beginning in late 1930s
From early competitions in the 1890s to the legendary games of the NCAA tournament, CollegeBasketballArchive.com provides thousands of newspaper articles on college basketball games from the past. Stories about every National Collegiate Athletic Association champion are contained in the archive, including stories on legendary coaches like John Wooden and Jim Valvano as well as great players such as Bill Walton and Michael Jordan.
"The NCAA Tournament is a special event that has a history unlike any other and being able to access first hand accounts of these games is incredible," said Greg Hollingsworth, researcher for the site. "Where else are you going to find these stories as they're being told? From Texas Western's miracle championship run in 1966, or NC State's "Cinderella" victory in 1983, it's all in here, everything a college basketball fan could ever want or need."
CollegeBasketballArchive.com is sponsored by NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online. In addition to the archive, the website contains a timeline with detailed newspaper accounts. For example, under the year 1939, an article about the inaugural national collegiate men's basketball championship can be found in the March 28, 1939 edition of The Brainerd Daily Dispatch.
Using Adobe Reader and Optical Character Recognition technology, sports enthusiasts can quickly find news and stats about their favorite teams and players. For instance, to find an article about Wilt Chamberlain during the NCAA championship game in 1957, just type in "Wilt Chamberlain" and select the date "March 24, 1957" (day after game was played) under the advanced search.
The archive also provides an opportunity for college basketball fans to reminisce and share stories from the past. Jeff Kiley, Director of Sales and Marketing for NewspaperARCHIVE.com, has spent the last few evenings with his sons reliving his favorite college basketball moments from the past. "We have spent hours in the archive reading the actual newspaper articles about Bob Knight leading his Hoosier team to the 1987 championship, Lorenzo Charles no-so-gentle dunk to secure the 54-52 win in the championship game over heavily-favored Houston in 1983 and Christian Laettner stomping on Kentucky literally and figuratively the 1992 East Regional final in what I thought at the time was the greatest game I had ever seen," Kiley said.
CollegeBasketballArchive.com is part of a series of free archives that include WinterGamesArchive.com, MartinLutherKingJrArchive.com, AbrahamLincolnArchive.com, AsbestosArchive.com and TitanicArchive.com. Later this week NewspaperARCHIVE.com will also release ProBaseballArchive.com, where researchers can find thousands of first-hand accounts of some of the most legendary figures in American sports history.
Researchers interested in finding more information about college basketball can also go to NewspaperARCHIVE.com where there are 1,886,317 newspaper pages about basketball and 204,801 pages about college basketball. NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online, is owned by Heritage Microfilm and began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999.
